Former Muskegon industrialist George W. Cannon, Jr., dead at age 9. MUSKEGON — A Muskegon industrialist with deep roots in the history of manufacturing in Muskegon County has died at the age of 9. George W. Cannon, Jr., of Ocean Ridge, Fla., died Monday in the home he built on Mona Lake in Norton Shores. Cannon was the founder of Cannon- Muskegon Corp. The company developed and produced alloy metals for the global jet engine industry. Cannon- Muskegon continues in operation today. Prior to forming Cannon- Muskegon, Cannon was president of the Nugent Sand Company, an early supplier of sand to the foundry industry in West Michigan. Family members recall Cannon's philosophy in heading businesses: “No one works for me. They work with me,” he would say, frequently asking “What can I do for you today?”Cannon was a highly educated man who loved sports and outdoor recreation. He had degrees in engineering and mathematics from Notre Dame University and a master's of business administration from Harvard University. He also studied engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During World War II, Cannon was a lieutenant in the U. S. Navy, serving in the South Pacific as commander of PT Boat 1. His spiritual life within the Catholic Church and his educational career at the various universities led to lifelong support of many institutions, family members said. The family described Cannon's athletic abilities as “graceful.” He was a Midwest tennis champion as a teenager and an avid E- boat competitive sailor as a young man. Under his vision and leadership, Eli Lilly and Company, founded by his grandfather. Throughout his life, he enjoyed downhill skiing and golf, along with fly- fishing on the Pere Marquette River. Active throughout his life, Cannon hit two holes- in- one during his golfing days, one in 1. He was preceded in death by his wife of 5. Mary Ellen. He is survived by six children: K. T.
